Who We Are
at First Baptist Church
We Are a Historic ChurchFounded on the corner of Kiowa and Weber Streets in 1872, First Baptist Church has been gathering as a community of faith for nearly 150 years now. In fact, there are only two congregations in Colorado Springs older than FBC -- the First United Methodist and First Presbyterian Churches. We were literally being born as the city of Colorado Springs was being formed!
As a historic downtown church that has no intentions of leaving the downtown area, we are a congregation that cares deeply about our community and the city's most vulnerable people. As such, we have longstanding partnerships with Family Promise/Interfaith Hospitality Network and La Puente Home -- a ministry located in Colorado's poorest county. |
We Are a Diverse ChurchIn an ever polarized world, we are a uniquely diverse congregation in that we spread the theological, political, and economic spectrums. It's not uncommon to find yourself sitting next to someone in worship who voted differently than you, holds a different beliefs than you, and even finds themselves in a very different salary bracket than you. We are rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black and white, young and old, theological traditional and theologically progressive... you get the point!
We are proud of our diversity, because we believe that when all of these different people with their different experiences and beliefs gather together in our sanctuary, it is testimony to the fact that what God does is bigger than what we can do on our own. What we do separates us, but what God does has the power to bring us together despite our many differences. That is what we believe to be our unique place and voice among the many churches in our city. We are a body that not only acknowledges our many differences, but is learning to embrace them. If you're looking for a community of faith that is filled with people who don't think and believe just like you, we might be the church for you! |
